Drawing Fundamentals and the Creative Sketchbook
with Ian Mackay

The sketchbook is often considered an artist’s personal diary. It’s an excellent way to record a whole range of ideas and a handy means of improving drawing skills. Economy of expression and visual thinking are just two benefits of using a sketchbook effectively. An essential artist’s tool, it can help “unblock” creativity and become a continuing source of inspiration for larger works.

This 8-week workshop will build and enhance your drawing skills and kick-start sketchbook-keeping as a regular element of your artistic practice. Still life objects and other sources will be basis of this workshop.

Weather permitting,  we will sketch outdoors for part of the last two sessions.

You will learn:
• Drawing fundamentals
• Shape, proportion and layout
• Linear perspective
• Form in space and light

Ian Mackay is an oil and watercolour painter and teacher. He is an artist member of the Red Head Gallery, Toronto’s most enduring artist collective and a graduate of OCADU. Ian combines contemporary art issues with traditional processes and techniques.

Barry Coombs Studio is in the west end of Toronto near Lansdowne and Dupont. Free parking is available at the studio. Unfortunately, the studio is not accessible. There is one flight of stairs.
